LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland - Marcel Hirscher beat Felix Neureuther in a testy Austria vs. Germany duel for the World Cup slalom title on Sunday. Racing last as the controversial first-run leader, Hirscher finished 0.76 seconds inside Neureuthers time to overtake his rival in the standings. Hirscher then circled the finish area in a wide sweep, pounding his chest with his right fist in celebration. Earlier, Austrian and German team bosses had traded barbs before the decisive run over a first-run gate-setting design by one of Hirschers coaches. "At the end, everything is fine," said Hirscher, who added his second straight slalom trophy to the third straight overall title he clinched Saturday. Neureuther said he had been "quite mad" after his first run, but acknowledged Hirscher as a worthy winner. "A very, very tough end," said Neureuther, who was denied his first season-long title. "The last race was maybe the most difficult of the whole year. The best won and it was Marcel." Olympic champion Mario Matt was third, trailing 1.08 behind his Austrian teammates two-run time of 2 minutes, 7.74 seconds. Hirscher had led by 0.06 on the morning course. He raced first on the best snow through a gate-setting by an Austria coach that was branded unfair and ugly by Neureuthers team director, Wolfgang Maier, and ridiculous by American racer Ted Ligety. Austria team director Hans Pum defended its right to set any course within the rules. "I can understand it a bit," said Hirscher, of the anger also expressed by the France team. "The course setter will always try to set for his athlete." Still, Hirscher fully earned his third slalom victory this season on a less challenging second-run course set by the Sweden team. Neureuther stood hunched resting on his ski poles in the finish area to watch Hirscher race for the title. They were locked on the same time at the final check point, but Neureuther had lost speed through the last six gates and Hirschers smoother run carried him to a clear winning margin. The new champion first greeted Matt, who beat him to the Olympic title last month, before going to console Neureuther. "Its fine," between us, Neureuther said, "because Marcel wasnt setting the first run today." On Saturday, Neureuther had denied Hirscher the season-long giant slalom title by the minimum 0.01 margin. Then, the Germans third-place finish as the final racer knocked the Austrian down to fourth and into a points tie with Ligety. The American got that title on a tiebreaker — 5-2 on race wins — over Hirscher. Germanys Maier earlier revealed that Austria considered a formal protest Saturday against Neureuthers skis. Had he been disqualified, Hirscher would have taken Ligetys title. "When they win everything, everything is fine," Maier said, describing the Austria team as "the most unfair nation. Always they are finding something to show not really good sportsmanship." John Randle Jersey . A 23-year-old rookie, Stroman is 4-2 with a 3.44 earned run average in 12 games this season, the past seven of those being starts. He logged the first scoreless outing of his career on Friday versus Oakland in a no-decision. Which is to say, the top of this years draft class is not as dynamic or exciting as the 2013 class of Nate MacKinnon, Sasha Barkov, Jonathan Drouin and Seth Jones and its not as strikingly promising as the highly-anticipated 2015 slate of Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin. Mike Hughes Jersey . The top-ranked Spaniard won his fourth Madrid Open on Sunday after Kei Nishikori was forced to withdraw with a hip injury when trailing 2-6, 6-4, 3-0 in the final. And Nadal, who is coming off to uncharacteristic quarterfinal losses on clay, said his mental strength is still lacking just two weeks ahead of the French Open. Danielle Hunter Jersey . Louis Cardinals for the National League Wild Card, are in the drivers seat as they open the final series of the regular season, but they face a large task in the form of the Philadelphia Phillies.ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Wes Welker says he has no apprehensions about concussions or rust as he returns to the Denver Broncos lineup Sunday for the first time in more than a month. Its the longest the 10-year pro has ever been sidelined. Welker missed the Broncos last 3 1/2 games after sustaining his second concussion in a four-week span just before halftime in a game against Tennessee on Dec. 8. The Broncos sorely missed him four days later in a 27-20 loss to San Diego, when they were just 2 for 9 on third down and suffered their only home loss of the season. Denver (13-3) hosts the Chargers (10-7) Sunday in the AFC Divisional round. "One of the first times Ive been out of the game on the sidelines, so Im very anxious to get back," said Welker, who was cleared last week during the bye and quickly regained his rhythm with Peyton Manning. "Yeah, when youve played as long as I have it comes back pretty quick. I really wasnt too worried about that," Welker said. He also said hes not going to fret about the possibility of another head injury when he lines up in the slot Sunday. "I dont worry about the concussions or anything like that. I just focus on my assignment, my techniquee and go out there and play the best I can," he said.dddddddddddd Welker caught a career-high 10 TD passes in his first season with Manning after spending his last six seasons catching passes from Tom Brady in New England. He was on pace for his sixth career 100-catch season before being sidelined and finished with 73 catches for 778 yards. Welker was one of the several free agents the Broncos signed last winter in the wake of their devastating 38-35 double-overtime loss to Baltimore in the playoffs last year. "I suffered disappointment, too, last year," said Welker, whose Patriots were beaten by the Ravens 28-13 in the AFC championship a week later. "Im just as hungry as everybody else and want to get out there and play my best." With 15-25 mph winds expected, Denvers downfield passing attack to Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker might be curtailed against the Chargers, which could put an even bigger emphasis on Welkers routes. "I dont know if its going to be windy enough to affect the passing game or not but you just have to focus in and be ready," Welker said. "I think it will affect the kicking game more than anything if it is windy."
